My Blue Elephant

The other night, after printing out three more embroidery patterns that I will probably never ever stitch, I realized I had a serious disease and needed to go Hoarders Anonymous. I would love to show you the seven (or is it eight? Or nine?) binders I have filled with cross stitch charts, embroidery designs, and tutorials on making all kinds of things but I haven't Swiffered my bookcase in a quite awhile and wouldn't want you to see the dust-covered shelves. Some of the patterns and charts have been purchased by yours truly but the majority are freebies from different blogs and websites. The thing is I could live to be 200 years old and still never get around to making every single project in those notebooks.

Since I had no idea if Hoarders Anonymous even existed, I decided to stop searching for more patterns and start making something from one already in my collection. I've been wanting to make an elephant since forever so I whipped up this little guy (over a two day period).

Blue felt elephant

I love my little elephant.

He's made out of acrylic felt and I enlarged the pattern, which puts him close to 7" from trunk to tail, if he had a tail, that is. (Oops. Looks like somebody forgot the tail.) I made the mistake of saving the stitching around his legs for last. I should have done that first to make it easier when it was time to stuff him. There are two smaller elephants in the pattern that I plan to make as well so I can have a little elephant family to play with. Uh, I mean so I can pose them on a dust-covered shelf in my bookcase.

About the pattern . . . I had printed it out a couple of years ago after seeing it on this post on this Portuguese blog. But it looks like it originally came from cafe.naver.com/feltzzang, which is a Korean site that I cannot navigate at all. I'm pretty sure they offer free patterns but I can't figure how to get to them since Google's English translation doesn't cover everything there. The Portuguese blog has lots of free patterns too, but it appears they all came from other sites. I have issues with this. It's ok to link to a pattern but it's not ok to re-post those patterns on your blog even if they are freebies. (Apparently I'm not upset enough to keep from using one of the patterns though.) If I could locate the elephant pattern on the Feltzzang site, I would link to that instead of to the blog.

Update: After looking at more of the posts on that blog, I'm not so sure all the patterns are freebies from other blogs. Take a look at this one. That's from a book, isn't it? I have mixed feelings about this blog now. Someone once told me copyright laws are not the same in other countries -- she was trying to justify sending photocopies of x-stitch charts in a swap -- which may be true, but I don't think anyone should be posting photos of patterns from books or magazines.

If you know anything about Feltzzang and if they offer free stuff, please let me know. I feel bad for using a pattern from them that may not have been offered at no charge.

I think the elephant is gorgeous, even if he hasn't got a tail. Horders annonymous would have a very large membership. I have made a decision to use up all the patterns, kits etc that I have here. I have decided that I am going to go through all my magazines and do the patterns I want and then find someone who wants to use the magazines. I am trying very hard not to sign up for lots of new things too, but it is very difficult.

This is so cute....but I have one for you. I have been saving patterns that you post for several weeks...and you know what...I don't even stitch a stitch....I think I have the problem not you!

I have big plans you know...someday!

That's is the most darling thing! I heart it!

I need HA too. I have so much scrapbook stuff that it has crippled my ability to scrapbook. I spend so much time sifting through cr -- I mean good stuff trying to find just the right thing that I only end up doing like a page a month!

I finally got my craft room in enough order that I can at least walk through it. This weekend's mission is to get rid of the scrapbook supplies I won't ever use.

I went to a thrift store yesterday and everything was 50% off. Among other things, I got a whole mess of buttons. :|

I'm so glad there's someone else like me! I have so many patterns, and I want to make 'em all! Just when I finally make a decision to start something, someone goes and posts another great pattern or tutorial. I did actually start on a purse yesterday, so as long as no one posts anything new and exciting today, I plan to finish it, yay! Love your little elephant, think I'll go check out that pattern. . .

I need Hoarder's Anonymous, too. But for fabric and yarn. My knitting pattern binder is getting a bit large, too, so maybe add that?

I love the elephant. I want to make a little something for Luke's preschool class for their last day of school (in May) and the elephant may be great for the girls. If I can make some race cars for the boys I'll be set!

He's so sweet! And to think he'd been hidden away in your hoarded files, just waiting to see the light of day!

OK. If you start making things from your pattern bindings, you will force me to copy(sorta) by making a project from each of my craft/sewing project books...those are MY crack.

I think he is quite a cutie, and what I want to know is, why don't YOU have an Etsy shop?

So it looks to me like HA is ready to elect officers and vote on bylaws. I'm printing out Patty for President bumper stickers right now. The elephant is exceptional. If that's a reflection of your party preferences, though, I may have to vote for another candidate.

The elephant is so cute! I actually visit that blog several times a week, and never saw that guy! Yours is so cute!

He's adorable... and why does an elephant need a tail anyway? I don't think they need it for balancing or for defending themselves, so... you're off the hook.

You are expressly forbidden from telling my husband about HA. He might suggest that I join. I don't want to. They make you get rid of stuff.

Aw, I love the little elephant! I didn't even notice he was missing a tail.

I have quite the growing collection of patterns and tutorials gleaned from other blogs and sites, and I have told myself that my 2009 goal is to work through them all so I can decide which ones are worth keeping--and so I can say I actually used them, of course. I guess that means I should consider getting started....
