Vintage Thingies Thursday Ornament

My vintage thingy for this week's Vintage Thingies Thursday has nothing to do with the kitchen but I am sharing it anyway. Recent blog posts from Twyla and Elizabeth about Christmas ornaments got me thinking about my own ornament collection. My mom still buys my sister and me an ornament every year, and most of them are from Hallmark, but my first Hallmark one came from our next-door neighbor at the time, Mrs. Rose. It's the reindeer from the Tree Treats Collection (I just found out that out). I've always liked him because he looks like a sugar cookie and I like cookies.

And, this is the back.

About ten years ago, I saw this ornament for sale at some kind of collectibles show and it was going for $100. That one was still in the original box. Out of curosity, I just checked online and found one for sale for $30 and another (out of the box) for $105.

Hmm. $105 would buy me an a bunch of embroidery patterns. And, an apron or two. And, some Bazooka.

Just kidding. I couldn't sell mine. Besides, just because someone is selling it for that much doesn't mean someone will pay that much, right?

Pop on over to Confessions of an Apron Queen for more Vintage Thingies Thursday.

I agree, I would never pay that much. To me, if I can get it cheaper then why pay too much in the first place? There will always be more lovely decorations and patterns and aprons coming along for sale that are better and less expensive but I DO love your ornament you found though :-)

I think that ornament is just too cute. Can you believe the price? I would not pay that for it, but would really like to come across one. Great post.

I think maybe hallmark stuff is all very collectible.
Cute ornament! Looks just like a cookie.

I can see someone being willing to pay that much for it if they had one of their own that was lost or destroyed and it had high sentimental value to them. Would I? Probably not, but as my husband says, "Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them."

I wouldn't pay $105 for an ornament either, but it is really cute. Is it a particular brand?

Oh, duh. I just reread the top part of your post and saw its a Hallmark ornament.

PS: I'm a Bazooka fan, too. lol!

You can still think to yourself that it's *worth* that much! Makes it a real treasure.

I just started giving my kids annual ornaments last year - embroidered of course. I think having the date makes ornaments so much more special.

Oh, that is really cute. I don't think I could get rid of it, either.

Ok the reality that my early married life is now considered vintage just hit me like a ton of bricks. I'm vintage. hmmm. I kind of like the sound of that. The ornament is and will be a treasure...

I loved seeing your ornament. It is too cute. One of the reasons those early Hallmarks were so valuble is that they didn't make that many of them. They hadn't gotten as popular as they are today. You have a treasure because of what it means to you. My husband is always saying (when I tell him how much it's worth), "Yeah, but is anybody gonna pay that much for it?"
Have a good day! Twyla

Another thing that makes this cutie more valuable besides its age is the fact that it is part of a collection and someone may need it to complete that set. I paid $50.00 last Christmas for the first in the "Windows on the World" series that my father had never been able to get because he didn't notice the series until year 2. It was a "good" price though, since I saw it on some sites for more thant 100!

That is too cute! I couldn't sell it because of the memories.

You never know what something will sell for on ebay. I had a set of identical salt and pepper shakers once. The first set sold for $20 something. I was happy. The next set sold for over $100! I was even happier. You just never know.

I love your blog!! Thanks for visiting mine today. I see you have a Shih Tzu. I love my Shih, Bibi. She used to be on myspace too, but I didn't have time to keep up with it.
I love the ornament. I reminded me that Christmas is about 4 months away. I'd keep that cute little ornament. Especially since it holds so many memories. (I can never sell anything).
I saw in your profile that you want to marry your iPod. I had to laugh because I know what you mean. What did we ever do without those things?? I guess we used Walkmans and cassette tapes. Glad those clunky days are long gone!
It was nice visiting your blog. Have a good one!

He looks just like a sugar cookie , very cute :)

You would be surprised at what some people will pay for vintage things if you still have the original box.

I love old ornaments, especially if the date is on them.

I've seen some of my treasures online too. Very tempting, but I mostly hang onto my favorites.
